2023
by Louisa May Alcott, adapted by Sophie Key
Venue: Barley Room/Cellar Bar/Courtyard (promenade), Farnham Maltings.
‘Little Women’ is a great ensemble piece. Everyone can identify with one of the March girls, the stories are very human and the characters are warm and appealing. The decision was made early on to have two casts of the March girls, young and old (er!), which reflects the ages in the original two books, ‘Little Women’ and ‘Good Wives’. This opened the door to lots of fun with the adaptation, the older girls could comment on the young girls behaviour (what would you say to your sixteen year old self?) and the young girls act as the inner child for the older girls – reminding them of who they are and what’s important to them.

The other big creative decision taken was to make it an immersive, promenade production. This created all sorts of challenges from a technical and logistical point of view but it was so much fun and the audience loved it. Keeping things on the move gave the show a wonderful energy and vitality.
Loved it - the staging was brilliant- I felt like a guest in the March’s home. I was captivated from beginning to end. Congratulations to absolutely everyone who played a part in bringing this production to life.
